The best of our grapes, our vines, our terroir, to craft a truly exceptional wine: APPIUS.

Appius

2013

The fourth edition of APPIUS, the dream wine of Hans Terzer, also remains true to the tenets of its creator: "To best express the respective vintage by harvesting and selectively developing the best varieties of grapes.”  2013 was characterised by a relatively late harvest with fully ripe grapes exhibiting very strong acidity, nice fruit  notes and intense aromas. The Cuvee is predominantly Chardonnay, with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Blanc comprising the remainder. The result: a multi-layered complex bouquet with exotic fruit notes such as: pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, but also reminiscent of Williams pears and apples together with light floral notes. Dense and creamy on the palate with mineral acidity and a never-ending finish. The corresponding vintage shows opulence and finesse, an elegant, but still very complex white wine, which promises to remain an extraordinary drinking pleasure as it evolves in the cellar.

A COMPLETELY NEW AND SENSATIONAL WINE

Since 1977 Hans Terzer has borne responsibility for wine production at St. Michael-Eppan Winery, bringing it to the top of the Italian and international wine world in just a few years. “I’ve had the idea of APPIUS in my head for a long time; I just had to wait for the right moment.”

During his regular inspections of the vineyards, he found many years ago that individual vines had the potential to produce absolute top wines, due to a very low yield. “I wanted to harvest and develop these grapes separately, creating a completely new and sensational wine – a wine that we at St. Michael-Eppan had not created up until now.”

He seems to have succeeded in APPIUS 2010. Sourced from various historical vineyards within the municipality of Eppan, the majority is Chardonnay; Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon comprise the remainder. “APPIUS is basically fermented and aged in small oak barrels. After twelve months of aging in wood, it then matures on the lees for nearly three more years, inside steel tanks.

APPIUS AS COLLECTOR'S ITEM

So precious an interior indubitably needs a refined exterior. The modern, elegant and minimalist design of the bottle is in keeping with the St. Michael-Eppan philosophy. The dark glass bottle makes it clear that the essence is always invisible to the eye and that we should allow the senses to lead us.

Every year, not only the content is reinterpreted but the design of the bottle also changes. The goal is to design a valuable wine collection that will delight wine aficionados around the globe every year. APPIUS is a limited edition: each of the 7000 bottles is numbered. Anyone who would like to supplement his or her wine cellar by acquiring one of the coveted bottles of APPIUS must act quickly. It will certainly be worth your while, because a storage potential of at least ten years or even more has been predicted. Let APPIUS astound you.
