With passion and courage, Hans Terzer has brought St. Michael-Eppan wines to the avantguarde of Italian enology.
One of his great talents is his extensive knowledge of varieties, which he has developed in strength over the last 40 years. “Each variety needs its own specific site, and yield must be based upon quality”.
Throughout his career he has developed passion for white grapes, becoming one of the pioneers of South Tyrolean white wines. He was one of the first in South Tyrol to begin the ageing of white wines in barrique.
In the late ‘90s Hans Terzer discovered some areas close to the Winery, extremely ideal for the production of a great Pinot Noir and a great relationship was born between him and the prima donna variety.
In 1997 the Italian wine magazine, Il Gambero Rosso, named him as one of the ten best winemakers in the world. In 2000, the St. Michael-Eppan Winery was named "Cantina dell'anno" (Winery of the Year). In 2017 the most important and prestigious German gourmet and lifestyle magazine, "Der Feinschmecker", honoured Hans Terzer with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, he was named "Wine Personality of the Year 2023" by the renowned Gault&Millau guide.
