Der FEINSCHMECKER honours Hans Terzer for his life’s work

“Der FEINSCHMECKER”, the biggest entertainment and lifestyle magazine of its kind, has awarded Hans Terzer for his life’s work. On 29 April at Bensberg Palace in Cologne, FEINSCHMECKER awarded prizewinners in various categories. Hans Terzer received an award in the “lifetime achievement” category. He was presented the award by actor Barbara Schöneberger.

Der FEINSCHMECKER has been awarding prizes to personalities from the international winemakers’ scene for 15 years. This year they selected a South Tyrolean: Hans Terzer.
Here is an extract from his tribute:
The FEINSCHMECKER WINE Award 2017 for “Lifetime Achievement” goes to the exceptional South Tyrolean cellar master, Hans Terzer. At just 21 years old, at the end of the 1970s, Hans Terzer confronts his winemaking comrades in the South Tyrolean winery St. Michael Eppan with his revolutionary new ideas. No longer should the red Vernatsch grape, which yields little profit, play the leading role in the range, but rather white wine varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer. Then, the young cellar master compels the approx. 350 winemakers to drastically reduce their crop size in order to boost quality. Terzer’s biggest success becomes the quality line of wine, “Sanct Valentin”, which you now couldn’t imagine not being stocked in any top class restaurant in Italy. Hans Terzer’s super selection, “APPIUS” has proven that even after 40 years as cellar master, he is still driven to introduce new ideas and to strive for even better quality.

To whom does FEINSCHMECKER award this special prize?
FEINSCHMECKER WINE AWARD – Lifetime Achievement category
Outstanding individuals from the international winemaking scene who have made a lasting mark on winemaking are honoured all year round by the wine judges from the FEINSCHMECKER editorial team with the “Lifetime Achievement Award”. This award emphasises a winemaker’s life’s work. The award particularly recognises the visionary work and exemplary role of the winner for younger generations of winemakers.
This year marked the 15th time the FEINSCHMECKER Wine Awards awarded the category of “Lifetime Achievement”, and Hans Terzer takes his place alongside a line-up of top wine personalities, for example: Angelo Gaja (Italy), Livio Felluga (Italy), Miguel Torres (Spain), Paul Draper (California), Angelo Montes (Chile), Nicolas Catena (Argentina) and Thierry Manoncourt (France).
